A Research Institute established with an objective to assess and understand the risk to contribute for the sustainability complying with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR), IHRR envisions to understand the risk and application of interdisciplinary knowledge with technologies to contribute for risk reduction and bridging of academic research with professionals and policymakers for the sustainability.

Local Disaster and Climate Resilience Plan

Collection and review of available information on different hazards and disaster risk including disaster preparedness and response for the preparation of risk profiles. Collection of Local disaster and climate-resilient information and conducting VCA with the use of spatial and attribute references. Workshops, Key Informant Interviews, and focus group discussions during the process of developing the LDCRP. Prepare comprehensive GIS maps and develop municipal geodatabases. Prepare and deliver high-quality LDCRP documents and submit the summary report, factsheets, and PowerPoint presentation.

Demonstration of UAV Surveying and DGPS

Institute of Himalayan Risk Reduction launches Disaster Academy, training final-year engineering students in Kathmandu Valley on spatial data collection tools like DGPS and Drones, in collaboration with Geovation Nepal and Cosmos College of Management and Technology. The initiative aims to empower youths with skills for science-based disaster risk reduction, leveraging technology for local capacity building.

Study on Opportunities for Investment in Nature-based Solutions in Lower Karnali flood exposed Palikas

Developed flood hazard model and explored the opportunities for the nature based solutions for lower Karnali flood-prone areas like Bardiya and Kailali districts

Enhancing Flood Resilience: Scenario Design, Vulnerability Assessment, Early Warning Strengthening & Training Support

Anticipatory Action(AA) Tool for Heat & Cold Waves in Nepal

The project involved organizing an inception workshop, conducting historical trend analysis, developing regression models, creating a web-based application, finalizing the tool, and sharing it with the START Network team to enhance preparedness for heat and cold wave events.

Household level landslide risk of the households inBalaucha, Owa and Khinnebhadi to prepare thelandslide vulnerability and susceptibility mapping

The project aimed to develop landslide susceptibility maps, conduct household vulnerability surveys, deploy drones for mapping, compute household-level vulnerability assessments, and submitted a final report in compliance with NDRRMA guidelines.

Localization of BIPAD Portal in Rapti Sonari and Narainapur Rural Municipality, BankePage

The project achieved milestones in disaster preparedness by collecting data, stationing local DRR Fellows, training youths in data collection, capacitating officials in data processing, and preparing resources for the BIPAD Portal's localization.

Landslide Susceptibility Map Assessing Rainfall Threshold for Landslide to trigger program

The project focused on landslide risk management in Shankarapur municipality, involving detailed inventory preparation, data collection coordination with local government, susceptibility model development, and rainfall threshold derivation for landslide triggers.

Conduct Household census using digital technology in Raptisonari & Narainapur Rural Municipality Banke

Using the DASTAA platform, 36 local enumerators surveyed 22,903 households in two rural municipalities, collecting GPS data and images. Findings were reviewed and validated by Palikas and wards, with case studies and reports prepared.

Community and ecosystem-based non-timber forest products (NTFPs) production, processing and marketing initiative

This project aimed to raise income for Indigenous forest-dependent communities by utilizing degraded land, promoting sustainable production and marketing of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs), and increasing revenue from forest-based enterprises through sustainable forest management.

Landslide Subceptibility Mapping and Establishment Landslide Early Warning System in Baitadi

In Patan and Dashrathchand municipalities, initiatives done included landslide susceptibility mapping, telemetric rainfall station installation, mobile app development for landslide alerts, and training 200 participants on disaster risk reduction, focusing on landslide awareness.

ALERT-Bhimeshwor: Adoption of Landslide Early Warning System in Bhimeshwor Municipality

Efforts focused on landscape assessment, revising susceptibility maps, and integrating forecast data for better landslide preparedness. Additionally, establishing monitoring mechanisms and strengthening the Early Warning System through capacity-building and simulation drills aimed to mitigate risks effectively.

Integration of Visualization System and Analytics into the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology

This project focused on integrating DHM forecast data, updating the tool, and incorporating stakeholder feedback for wider usability.

Risk and Hazard mapping (including flood risk mapping study of major watershed)-3 Rivers/tributaries

The project involved reviewing existing hydro-meteorological data, establishing flood hazard baselines, mapping flood risks along Melamchi and Indrawati rivers, and assessing vulnerable areas in the Melamchi watershed.
