Kathmandu, 2 October 2026 — Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) and the Institute of Himalayan Risk Reduction (IHRR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly organize Kathmandu Climate Action Week 2026, scheduled for 23–29 November 2026.
The MoU was signed by Mr. Muktiram Aryal, Chief Administrative Officer of KMC, and Er. Suraj Gautam, Executive Director of IHRR, in the presence of Ms. Sunita Dangol, Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

The collaboration will focus on air pollution reduction, waste management, urban flooding, extreme heat, water resource conservation, green spaces, cultural and environmental heritage, and disaster risk reduction. Activities will include policy dialogues, knowledge-sharing sessions, community engagement, and practical initiatives across schools, public spaces, and heritage sites.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Acting Mayor Dangol emphasized the importance of integrating traditional knowledge, indigenous practices, and community experiences with modern science and technology to strengthen environmental conservation.
IHRR Executive Director Suraj Gautam highlighted the importance of collective responsibility and collaboration in addressing Kathmandu’s growing environmental challenges. He also expressed his commitment to translating research recommendations from his earlier Mayor’s Research Fellowship into practical actions.
Kathmandu Climate Action Week 2026 aims to strengthen partnerships, promote citizen participation, and integrate climate resilience into municipal planning, policies, and investment priorities.
Through this partnership, KMC and IHRR envision a cleaner, healthier, greener, and more climate-resilient Kathmandu, driven by collaborative action and locally grounded solutions.
